Rosewood opens its first Sao Paulo hotel

Rosewood Hotels and Resorts has opened its first property in Brazil, located in the country’s financial centre and largest city of Sao Paulo.

The 160-room hotel and 100 branded residences are situated close to Avenida Paulista, within Cidade Matarazzo, a complex of early 20th century buildings which have been transformed into private residences, high-end stores and entertainment venues.

Rosewood Sao Paulo occupies former hospital Matarazzo Maternity, alongside a new-build “vertical garden tower”, and has been designed by “leading international figures including the Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel and artistic director Philippe Starck”.

The property also encompasses the historic Chapel of Santa Luzia, which has been restored in time for its 100th anniversary. The hotel is also home to over 450 works of art, from sculpture, paintings and tile work, to drawings, textiles and rugs, “representing Brazil’s wide range of artist expression, from street art to indigenous art”.

Dining options include six venues including casual brasserie Blaise, “serving a delicious mix of French cuisine influenced by elements of Brazilian gastronomy”, South American restaurant Taraz showcasing the art of wood-fired cooking, and jazz bar Rabo di Galo (pictured above), as well as two swimming pools, a cinema, music studio, and Rosewood’s signature Asaya wellbeing concept.

Commenting on the opening managing director, Edouard Grosmangin, said: “It has been a true honour to help bring such a unique hotel project to life in one of the world’s most dynamic cities. The team behind Rosewood Sao Paulo has spent a decade on this project to ensure it honours and celebrates the heritage of the city while breathing new life into the destination.

“In doing so we’ve created a hotel that is a true love letter to the city, the nation, and its people. We look forward to welcoming the world to experience Sao Paulo’s dynamic offerings firsthand and provide the place from which a cultural journey can begin and end.”

This month Marriott also announced plans to debut it luxury JW Marriott brand in Sao Paulo, with the conversion of an existing Four Seasons property located along Avenida Nacoes Unidas within Parque da Cidade.
