Sunway City, the flagship destination in Kuala Lumpur boasting the illustrious Sunway Resort as its centerpiece, embarked on an unprecedented renovation project in early 2020. This undertaking costing a staggering $60 million resulted in a stunning metamorphosis, with the unveiling of new themed suites, dedicated family spaces, new dining havens, and reimagined leisure amenities.
In a candid conversation with ArabiaTravelNews.com, Jeanne Chan, the Director of Commercials at Sunway Hotel and Resort in Kuala Lumpur, elaborated, “While the refurbishment initially commenced in 2020, the outbreak of the Covid pandemic forced us to pause. However, rather than succumbing to adversity, we seized the moment to minimize losses and embarked on an ambitious $60 million transformation endeavor. This initiative aimed not only to revitalize our facilities but also to digitalize our operations. When the travel market reopened, we were ready to welcome travelers with a rejuvenated offering!”
The hotel which has been catering to both local and international holidaymakers since 1996, now offers 477 smart, environmentally friendly, and intuitively designed rooms, suites and villas in 13 brand-new room categories.
Among these innovative offerings are experiential accommodations such as the Family Terrace and the Waterventure Terrace, providing direct access to the Waterventure water park. The Wellness Suite offers a tranquil sanctuary furnished with cutting-edge health technology, while Family-focused rooms and suites, including the Waterventure Terrace, Family Terrace, and Family Fun Suite, cater to families seeking a memorable retreat. For business travelers, Executive Suites provide a refined and functional space, while the Sunway Grand Suite and Presidential Suite exude opulence for those with discerning tastes.
Complementing these accommodation, Sunway Resort Hotel also introduced brand new curated spaces such as Wonderland Explorers, the resort’s new kids’ club, a new tropical freeform Swimming Pool, which has been completely reimagined and now features lush foliage, cascading waterfalls, LED lights and underwater speakers and the Premium Leisure Lounge for families to unwind and more.
A feather in the cap has been its first Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill – the first to open outside the UK, the renowned New York establishment – Black Tap Craft Burgers & Shakes, and the new laid-back poolside dining haven, Sunset Terrace. These exceptional culinary offerings promise an unparalleled dining experience.
Elaborating on the allure of Kuala Lumpur for Arab travelers, Chan remarked, “Kuala Lumpur’s tropical allure makes it an enticing escape from the Middle Eastern summer. With a culturally diverse landscape and a Muslim-majority population, Malaysia’s emphasis on promoting halal industries adds to its appeal. Moreover, Malaysia’s reputation as a shopping paradise is well-deserved. Our revamped accommodations and experiences position us perfectly to cater to this segment of travelers.”
Catering thoughtfully to Middle Eastern guests, the hotel presents a range of Arabic dishes on its menu and buffet spreads, an Arabic guest relations officer, and rooms equipped with a Qibla direction indicator, prayer mats, and Halal certification by JAKIM for their banquet kitchen.
With the launch of the new facilities, Sunway Resort hopes to continue their legacy of welcoming luxury travelers to the resort. With dedicated options specifically tailored to the latest travel and lifestyle trends, supported by state-of-the-art solutions, sustainable elements and home comforts, Sunway Resort is raising the industry standards once again.
“On June 1, 2023, Malaysia was named the ‘Best Muslim-Friendly Destination’ by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the ‘Best Muslim-Women-Friendly Destination’ by CrescentRating and Mastercard, at the Halal in Travel Awards held in Singapore. This accolade has strengthened our position as an ideal destination for Arab tourists. From architecture like KLCC and Merdeka Square to mega shopping malls, street markets and nightlife, as well as our beautiful nature with our many rain forests, beaches and caves, we have something for everyone,” added Chan.
Digital transformation also played a major part in the overall transformation at Sunway Resort and Hotel too. “Post-Covid, digital transformation is no longer an option. We had to create a more seamless guest experience, by automating and streamlining their travel process.
“Our hallmark digital feature is the new multi-purpose ‘Super App,’ empowering guests to book their stay, check in, access their room, and even remotely manage amenities like air conditioning and lighting. This comprehensive app places everything at their fingertips.
“Each guestroom features state-of-the-art technology features such as smart curtains, motion sensor night lights, electronic bidet, Internet Protocol television (IPTV), telephone (IP phone) and more,” she highlighted.
“In the coming six months, guests can anticipate the opening of additional facilities, including our Spa & Wellness Centre, the Presidential Suite, and the launch of another Gordon Ramsay restaurant, further enriching our offerings,” Chan concluded.
