Tripadvisor will use OpenAI tech to craft travel itineraries

Tripadvisor is integrating OpenAI technology into its Trips travel-planning product, it was reported in TravelWeekly.

Now in public beta testing, Trips is using the generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology to create personalized travel itineraries. Tripadvisor said its itinerary generator leans on the reviews on its site, of which there are more than 1 billion, thereby leveraging the insights of travelers when making recommendations.

Trips generates itineraries based on a few parameters entered by travelers: their destination and dates, traveling companions and interests. In return, the user gets a sharable, editable day-by-day itinerary. They can also save content from Tripadvisor, including reviews and photos from the community, as they plan.

“Tripadvisor was built on travelers helping travelers,” president and CEO Matt Goldberg said. “By harnessing the power of generative AI, we can begin to fully unlock the potential of our platform’s unparalleled review and traveler intent data, allowing us to offer truly unique travel guidance to our members.”

The AI feature is available in the U.S. via desktop and mobile web. Tripadvisor said it will become available in more markets, and on its app, as testing progresses.

Several travel companies have begun to incorporate generative AI technology like ChatGPT, including Kayak, Booking.com and Expedia Group.

In a release, Sanjay Raman, Tripadvisor’s chief product officer, said more upgrades are coming to Trips in the coming months that will improve personalized itineraries and expand planning tools.

Goldberg added, “The launch represents an important milestone in Tripadvisor’s strategy and is just one element of our plan to drive deeper engagement with travelers on our platform.”
