Amadeus unveils 2025 travel trends: Nostalgia, Innovation, and Connection to Shape the Future

Global travel is on the brink of transformation, with technology, nostalgia, and cultural shifts set to redefine how we explore the world. Amadeus, a leader in travel technology, has released its highly anticipated 2025 Travel Trends Report, developed in collaboration with trend-forecasting agency Globetrender. Drawing from Amadeus’ data and broader industry insights, the report identifies five key trends shaping the future of travel:

1. New Heydays: A Nostalgic Revival

Travelers are embracing the comfort of nostalgia, seeking simpler, happier experiences inspired by “rosy retrospection.” From the resurgence of retro-themed vacations to the revival of classic camping holidays, this trend reflects a cultural shift toward reliving the past.

“Travelers are under pressure to find joy in a volatile world, and it’s no surprise they’re turning to the ‘good old days’ when life seemed simpler,” said Jenny Southan, Founder and CEO of Globetrender.

In the U.S., adult summer camps like Club Getaway reported a 9 percent revenue increase in 2024, while Eurocamp in Europe anticipates its best year in five decades. Nostalgia is even influencing destinations, with tourists returning to places like Miami, once immortalized by shows like Miami Vice.

2. Personalized Flying: Tailoring the Skies

Advancements in AI, 5G, and VR are ushering in a new era of hyper-personalized air travel. Airlines are integrating algorithmic entertainment systems that cater to individual preferences, providing tailored content and shopping experiences mid-flight.

“With high-speed connectivity now commonplace, air travel is becoming as personalized as streaming at home,” said Daniel Batchelor, Vice President of Global Corporate Marketing & Communications at Amadeus.

Luxury airlines are also experimenting with virtual reality headsets, enhancing the in-flight experience. Premium startup beOnd, for instance, introduced Apple Vision Pros on its Maldives routes in 2024.

3. Trailblazer Hotels: More Than Just a Stay

In 2025, hotels will increasingly become the centerpiece of travel, doubling as immersive destinations. Properties like Jannah Lamu in Kenya and Maryhill Estate in Sweden offer unique cultural and historical experiences, while major chains such as Accor are creating curated boutique collections to meet this demand.

“Hotels are no longer just places to sleep but are becoming iconic calling cards that define trips,” Batchelor noted.

From a WWII-era bunker turned hotel in Hamburg to a restored Italian mansion in Lake Como, travelers are planning their itineraries around these standout accommodations.

4. Asia Uplift: A Tourism Renaissance

Asia is set to reclaim its position as a global tourism hub, thanks to relaxed visa policies and pop culture influence. China’s visa-free travel expansions and Thailand’s digital nomad visas are drawing international visitors, while shows like The White Lotus and Squid Game are sparking renewed interest in the region.

Amadeus data reveals remarkable growth in outbound travel from Asian cities, with Chengdu recording a 66 percent increase in passengers between 2016 and 2023. Similarly, Delhi saw a 31 percent rise in outbound travelers in 2023.

“Asia’s cultural treasures and modern initiatives are bringing the region back into focus for global travelers,” added Batchelor.

5. Connections IRL: Authentic Encounters

Amid digital fatigue, travelers are prioritizing real-world connections over screen time. Amadeus reports a 15.6 percent rise in solo leisure travel in 2023, with another 9.2 percent increase in 2024. Platforms like G Adventures and TimeLeft are leveraging this trend, creating opportunities for travelers to meet and forge genuine connections.

“Spontaneous travel and group adventures are reshaping the way people experience the world,” said Southan.

The rise of socially driven events, such as World Pride 2025 in Washington DC, underscores the growing demand for authentic, in-person interactions.

A Glimpse into Tomorrow’s Travel

Reflecting on the evolving travel landscape, Daniel Batchelor emphasized the blend of old and new defining 2025:

“After a year where change has become the backdrop to daily life, travelers are seeking a deeper connection to people and places. We’ll see a mix of nostalgic escapes and groundbreaking innovations, from AI-driven flying to one-of-a-kind hotel stays. Asia’s revival and the rise of spontaneous solo travel promise an exciting year ahead.”

As we approach 2025, the future of travel is set to be a harmonious blend of tradition and technology, catering to the evolving desires of travelers worldwide.
