Lufthansa adds more European routes for summer 2023

Lufthansa is adding a range of new European destinations from its hubs at Frankfurt and Munich for the summer 2023 schedule.

The German airline will add five new destinations from Frankfurt starting in April with flights to Belfast (four times per week), London Gatwick (twice daily), Asturias (three flights per week), Skopje in North Macedonia (up to two daily) and Biarritz (weekly).

Munich’s new routes for next summer will include the short-haul destinations of Asturias (weekly), Bordeaux (three per week) and Rzeszow (daily) from April, as well as long-haul services to Osaka in Japan and Mexico City, which will both operate three times per week from 2 May and 2 June respectively.

Lufthansa said it would fly to more than 205 destinations in summer 2023, which will be “almost as many” as it serviced before the Covid-19 pandemic. While the total number of connections from Frankfurt and Munich will reach 5,200 weekly flights – around 87 per cent of the pre-Covid level.

The airline’s parent company Lufthansa Group is also “simplifying” its loyalty schemes to create a “more transparent earning system” for achieving and retaining status for its Frequent Traveller, Senator and HON Circle members.

“There will also be greater rewards for loyalty to the airlines of the Lufthansa Group,” said the company. “In the future, the most loyal passengers will be eligible for the new Frequent Traveller Lifetime status in addition to the existing Senator Lifetime status.”

Sebastian Riedle, vice president of loyalty at Lufthansa Group, added: “Our priority is to create a simple and transparent programme, paired with special privileges throughout the travel chain. We want to offer the most simple and most attractive loyalty programme on the market.”

All changes to the airline group’s status programs will apply to flights from January 1, 2024.
