Air France – KLM signs Gerry’s as client for SAF programme

Air France-KLM’s Middle East establishment has partnered with Gerry’s Group to join its Corporate Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Programme.

This collaboration aims to accelerate the production and usage of SAF, which is one of the most effective methods for reducing CO2 emissions in aviation.

Sustainable Aviation Fuels are the most decisive ways of reducing CO2 emissions in the aviation industry. SAF can be blended with conventional kerosene (currently by up to 50 per cent) without any modification to aircraft, engines, or logistical and storage infrastructures. SAF projects selected by Air France-KLM reduce CO2 emissions by at least 65 per cent compared to fossil kerosene on a lifecycle basis.

To address this, Air France-KLM has implemented the corporate SAF programme, allowing it to partner with various organisations to accelerate the production and usage of SAF. The programme aims to make SAF more widely available, which could help pave the way for the future in aviation.

Gerry’s Group, a leading conglomerate established in 1963, has joined this initiative as part of its commitment to addressing environmental concerns and promoting a more sustainable aviation industry.

Speaking on the announcement, Stefan Gumuseli, General Manager Air France KLM; India and Middle East said: “At Air France-KLM, we believe that collaboration is key to driving meaningful change. We are proud to welcome Gerry’s Group to our Corporate Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) programme. Decarbonising aviation comes with its challenges, and we are pleased to see Gerry’s Group’s commitment to sustainability and their responsibility toward reducing the carbon emissions generated by air travel. This cooperation is a significant step forward in our collective efforts to build the aviation industry for generations to come.”

Arshad Wali Muhammad Group Director Gerrys Group said “Gerrys’s Group is proud to cooperate with Air France and KLM on their Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) programme. This initiative aims to significantly reduce carbon emissions thus contributing to the future for aviation. Together, we are committed to driving impactful change in aviation. We at Gerrys’s are committed to join hands with our partner AF – KLM to fully support the aviation long-term reduction emissions goal.”

Air France-KLM’s ambition is to reduce 30 per cent of CO₂ emissions per passenger/km by 2030 compared to 2019. To achieve this ambition, the Group aims to incorporate 10 per cent sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) by 2030, beyond the European mandate of 6 per cent for flight departures in Europe by the same deadline.

Air France-KLM has implemented a strict sourcing policy and is committed to purchasing only SAF that do not compete with food or feed, are RSB or ISCC certified for their sustainability, and are not produced from palm oil. SAF projects selected by Air France-KLM reduce CO₂ emissions by at least 65 per cent compared with fossil kerosene on a lifecycle basis.
