Kerala launches ₹200-cr ‘CIAL 2.0’ project to digitize Kochi Airport operations

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday launched the ₹200-crore ‘CIAL 2.0’ project aimed at fully digitising Cochin International Airport, positioning it for India’s anticipated aviation boom of one billion air travellers annually by 2040.

Speaking at the launch event held at the CIAL Trade and Convention Centre, the Chief Minister highlighted the strategic importance of ensuring the safety of air passengers and the protection of airport assets. “India witnessed 375 million air travellers in 2023–24, with 275 million domestic passengers — a 21 percent increase from the previous year. By 2040, India is expected to handle one billion air travellers annually. All airports must be prepared for this surge,” he said.

The CIAL 2.0 initiative introduces sweeping tech upgrades including AI-driven surveillance, full-body scanners to replace physical pat-downs, an automated tray retrieval system for faster baggage screening, and robust cybersecurity measures. Over 4,000 AI-enabled cameras have been installed to bolster perimeter and terminal security, while upgrades to the bomb detection and disposal systems are underway.

With around 50,000 daily passengers and over 12,000 personnel on site, Kochi Airport operates as a major transit hub involving 30 airlines, 400 agencies, and nearly 200 businesses. The CM stressed the importance of safeguarding digital infrastructure in such a high-traffic ecosystem.

Apart from the digital overhaul, other major developments are progressing rapidly — including apron construction as part of the ₹700-crore international terminal expansion and a commercial zone in front of Terminal 3, generating nearly 29,000 job opportunities. The CM praised CIAL for its inclusive growth model, citing a 45 percent dividend payout to investors and initiatives supporting local communities and workers, including cargo loader welfare schemes and infrastructure projects.

CIAL’s active role in the Wayanad Model Township project also underscores its commitment to sustainable regional development. With CIAL 2.0, Kerala’s flagship airport moves a step closer to becoming a fully digital, future-ready facility.
